ZERO WASTE APPROACH
LUNAR Laboratories is a brand founded in Bucharest, Romania, oriented towards clients all over the world. In our small laboratory we put a lot of importance with finding the best alternatives towards a more sustainable future in the textile industry, being able to mention as examples the fact that the denim we work with contains natural cotton and RPES (recycled polyester) and we use only organic cotton or bamboo, being OEKO-TEX, EcoVero, Global Recycled Standard or BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) certified.
We strongly believe that a greener, more environmentally-friendly business practice is not only important for the planet, but also for a business’ future success.
Our Slow Fashion world is based on following practices:
• we produce in small batches rather than big runs in order to reduce waste,
• we do not follow trends which means that our pieces are designed to be timeless (rather than “throw away”) and they will never become outdated,
• transportation is one of our main challenges since our customers are worldwide. We acknowledge the impact that this has on the environment and wherever possible we sell locally at markets and boutiques,
• every textile and material is flexibly placed in multiple products,
• leftover fabric from cut out of an older collection is used as a lining or bias tape for a present collection,
• we constantly revisit our previous collections to reinvent them in order to add to a new edition,
• we work together with our clients, manufacturers and distributors to ensure a fair and sustainable practice for everyone,
• we continuously search for more and more sustainable distributors until each piece in our products will not affect in any kind the environment.
.
We firmly believe that change comes from within and everyone must contribute to saving the planet with their own possibilities!
In the following, we will present the concepts that are the basis of textile production as we work in the manufacture of our products:
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is one of the world’s best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances.
If a textile article carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be certain that every component of this article, i.e. every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article therefore is harmless for human health.
GLOBAL RECYCLED STANDARD
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product. The standard applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, chemical content and labeling.
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is promoted by Textile Exchange, one of the most important non-profit organizations that internationally promote responsible and sustainable development in the textile sector . With this standard, Textile Exchange recognizes the fundamental importance of recycling for the growth of a model of sustainable production and consumption; aims to encourage the reduction of resource consumption (virgin raw materials, water and energy) and to increase the quality of recycled products.
ECOVERO
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ branded viscose fibers are the new standard for eco-responsible viscose in the fashion industry. Throughout the production process, we follow the principle of “take less, give more” – for our planet and our customers.
As compared with generic viscose, the production of LENZING™ ECOVERO™ has a substantially smaller environmental footprint. We strive to help build a cleaner and greener world by taking less from the environment, maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing waste in the production process.
Natural and renewable raw material wood comes from FSC® or PEFC™ certified and sustainably managed forests. The non-profit environmental protection organization Canopy has consistently ranked Lenzing among the top viscose producers worldwide due to its sustainable wood and pulp sourcing.
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are obtained from certified, renewable wood sources in an ecologically responsible production process in compliance with high environmental standards. Thus, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers contribute to a sustainable lifestyle and a clean environment. With our fibers, we strive to offer more benefits to our customers and meet consumers’ expectations for sustainable products.
BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE
Better Cotton’s traceability solution makes it possible to trace Better Cotton back to its country of origin using the Better Cotton Platform (BCP). With the market demanding more and more information about Better Cotton, helping farmers continue to access these markets and generate sustainable livelihoods from their cotton is a priority for us. At the same time, traceability will also enable us to better direct investment to the field level to support farmers in driving sustainability improvements and increasing their yields.
We still have a ways to go but we can all aim higher and start somewhere!
